Is Your Stomach Healthy?

The Ulcer Diseases That Trouble Us

Stomach ulcers, commonly referred to as gas trouble or acidity issues, affect many people in various forms and degrees. This week, lets learn about these ulcers in detail.

Why Do Stomach Ulcers Occur?

Ulcers can form in three areas: the food pipe (esophagus), the stomach, and the small intestine. The main reason is the excess secretion of acid in the stomach. Stomach acid helps digest the food we eat, but when its secreted in excess, it begins to erode the stomach lining, leading to ulcers.

Much like how even nectar becomes poison when overconsumed, excessive stomach acid harms the very organ that produces it. Lets now explore why acid production increases.

Causes of Stomach Ulcers

There are three major causes that stimulate acid secretion:

  1. Food habits – Spicy, oily, and processed foods increase acid production.
  2. Mind (Mental stress) – Emotional stress, workload, and anxiety boost acid secretion.
  3. Sleep pattern – Irregular sleep or lack of sleep can disrupt stomach function.

Bad habits like smoking, alcohol, skipping meals, and irregular eating further increase the risk. When you skip meals, acid remains in the stomach for a longer time and starts attacking its lining.

Also, a bacterium called Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) can settle in the stomach and promote acid secretion, causing ulcers.

Types and Stages of Ulcers

Though commonly referred to as a single condition, ulcers occur in multiple stages:

  1. Gastritis – Early stage with inflammation and redness of the stomach lining.
  2. Erosions – Followed by pain, burning, and irritation.
  3. Ulcer – The final stage. Healing takes months. Persistent abdominal pain usually indicates this stage.

With timely treatment and dietary control, these stages can be reversed before reaching the ulcer stage.

Can Ulcers Turn into Cancer?

Yes. If neglected, chronic ulcers can potentially develop into stomach cancer. Conversely, stomach cancers may also mimic the appearance of ulcers. So, tissue biopsy is essential to confirm the condition.

Doctors not only treat ulcers but also ensure they do not develop into cancer, provided patients follow up regularly and seek treatment on time

Symptoms of Stomach Ulcers

Ulcers can present with:

  • Burning sensation in the stomach
  • Upper abdominal pain or discomfort
  • Bloating
  • Nausea
  • Frequent belching or gas
  • Feeling of indigestion

Sometimes ulcers may even cause rumbling stomach noises. While other conditions may also cause similar symptoms, ulcers should be the first suspicion.

Endoscopy helps diagnose ulcers accurately and provides clarity on their stage and any other underlying issues like H. pylori infection or tumors. Modern endoscopes are slim, high-definition, and painless, making the procedure quick and easy even for children and elders.

Complications: Intestinal Blockage / Perforation / Bleeding

Ignoring ulcers can lead to:

  • Blockage between the stomach and intestine, causing severe pain, vomiting, and weight loss.
  • Perforation (a hole) in the stomach or intestine lining, causing emergency situations.
  • Bleeding when ulcers rupture nearby blood vessels — this can be life-threatening without emergency care.

Early treatment is critical to avoid these complications.

Treatment Options

Modern medicines are highly effective. About 30–40 years ago, without proper medications, people suffered for years. Today, most ulcers can heal within a few weeks with appropriate drugs.

If H. pylori is present, targeted antibiotics can eradicate it permanently. Along with medicine, dietary discipline is crucial:

  • Eat on time
  • Avoid tea, coffee, and spicy or fast food
  • Quit alcohol and smoking
  • Reduce stress, anger, and anxiety (all of which increase acid)
  • Practice good sleep habits, yoga, and healthy routines

With proper treatment and a healthy lifestyle, you can completely recover from stomach ulcers.

Is Surgery Needed?

Generally, ulcers heal with medication. But if they worsen into serious complications (blockage, perforation, bleeding), surgery may be necessary. Timely surgery, especially using endoscopy or laparoscopy, can save lives with minimal discomfort.

Summary

Understanding the types and symptoms of ulcers helps us address this increasingly common condition. By following healthy habits around food, mind, and rest, we can prevent conditions like gastritis, erosions, or ulcers altogether.

Our life… is in our hands.
